You could teach social studies, politics, or civics at any level, including at some colleges. You could run for public office, or you could serve as a staffer to an elected official. Every politician has lots of staff who do everything from setting up their schedule to advising them on policy issues. You could work for a government agency, for a nonprofit, or for a business that needs someone to liaise with the government. You have so many options - it really depends on what interests you!

What are some starting ideas for internships in public administration
What are some starting ideas for internships in public administration?
I'm planning on entering an MPA program next fall. I know it's kind of a long way off, but I really want to do an internship after I complete my studies. The degree I will be getting is a Master's in Public Administration. I will probably choose the concentration in Nonprofit Administration. I'd really like to do my internship for a large NGO - preferably one with an international focus. I would also consider internships in the federal or state government if I still could have a public service focus. Where are some good places to start?

If you are in the U.S., get in touch with your local senators and representatives (state and federal) and government leaders. If you give them a really big campaign donation, that is even better.

It could--especially if you do a program with a strong international P.A. emphasis. Some MPA programs (I know the University of Washington is one) have a cooperative arrangement with the Peace Corps that lets you begin your study on campus, then go into the Peace Corps and get credit for work you do there, and then return and finish up your degree. That might be something you'd want to look at.

What school? Look for public government events, meet people. Know what agency you want to work for - it's easier if you're passionate about one thing, i.e. education, the elderly. In government, getting hired is based on who you know, not always what you know.
3
It depends. Do you have an MPA from a reputation school? If so, then they should have career counseling help. Or did you get it online at University of Phoenix or some other diploma mill? It's pretty simple, start applying for jobs where you live. Any local government (city, county, village, town, etc.) should have a website with employment listings online. Having an MPA is a great way to start a career in local government. Also, visit your state's website and click on employment opportunities to see what state jobs are available. I suggest you also try interning or volunteering. You'll need some experience on your resume for some jobs. Good luck.

Work as a director for a city, hospital, or NPO. It's a good degree if you want to work for the gov't. I was considering doing a joint MPA/JD but the MPA doesn't really earn you that much money. I just went the JD route. Good luck!

Master's of Public Administration or MBA?
I'm presently looking at different graduate programs and want to pursue a career where making money isn't the ultimate bottom line. That is, I would like to have a cause to work toward. Which degree would be better for this? Would the MPA be too limiting? Can anyone with an MBA do any job requiring an MPA? Can I support a family in the future with an MPA-related career?

With either one, you need work experience first. By the sound of your post, you don't seem to have done this yet. I would suggest you get into the non-profit arena and work a few years, then think about a masters program. You'll then have a clear idea of what direction you want to go into.

Lots of government roles, of course - financial admin/management, programs audit, legislative analysis. Other fields are journalism, consulting, economics research, nonprofit advocacy and/or services, higher education admininstration. There are even more. It's up to you to figure out what you want to do with it. You should ask yourself WHY you would want the MPA, that might lead you to logical job considerations.

International Master of Business Administration or Master of Public Policy and Management
International Master of Business Administration or Master of Public Policy and Management?
Hello , I am about to get into grad school , the thing is that i am not sure with which major it'd be easier to find jobs after graduating. I am an international student and i am looking to work in the US and later moving back to Europe. I have to choose between any of these three majors and i'm extremely confused : International Master of Business Administration ; Master of Public Policy and Management; or Master of education in Counseling and Guidance. I was a Political Science major in undergrad and it has been extremely hard to find a job in that area especially since as an international student i can't work for government organizations. I would deeply appreciate your opinions.

To be honest with you it is close to impossible to get sponsorship for a corporate job in the US with the masters programs that you listed. The US work visa application and green card require that you have some special skill that can be quantified. Example of that would be technical skills. The exception to that is if you an expert in a particular field. Another exception would be finding a job with educational institutions which have slightly different regulations. I hope this helps you in making your decision.

Public administration degrees are useful for would-be government employees, policymakers, or anyone who wants to work in/run an organization that serves a societal need (as opposed to a for-profit business). It'd be silly to go back for a BS, though; as long as you had decent undergraduate grades, have good GRE scores, and have work experience in the public sector or a decent idea of how you can use the skills you've picked up in whatever field you were in before, you don't need formal training to apply for masters' programs. And you really don't want to waste the money: nonprofit jobs tend to be stable and offer great benefits, but you do earn less than private sector employees.

An MPA is not given as much weight generally then an MBA will. If you are therefore choosing between the two - I would say the MBA will make things easier for you. Good Luck!!!

if you are in the government service, MPA fits right for you, but being in the government is like accepting the fact that the salary is lower than that offered in the private sector... however, if you want flexibilities between a public and a private one, then i suggest that you go for MBA

Government: Federal, State and Local. Also, plenty of NGOs hire MPAs. If you're looking to have the greatest impact, though, the best bet is in local government. The problems of local government are dynamic, and no two days are the same. If you start out small as the manager of a township or small town and work your way up, you can have a measurable impact that actually touches people's lives

I got out back in '03, which was a VERY bad economy... much like this one! You read my answers, so you know that I made the mistake of not interning, which meant that I had to blow two more years of my life barely making any money in order to get into a career. After I graduated, I interned with a town manager's office. Nobody will hire someone with a degree and no experience. In job interviews, government people want to know what your track record is. They want to know how you will handle tough situations. They want someone who's established in government to vouch for you and verify that you are trustworthy and effective. Interning is how you accomplish that. From the internship, I got a few side jobs, and I was the recording secretary for the housing authority. Within 8 months, I was the CEO. That's a long story, but it definitely started my career in earnest. Involvement with local boards and commissions is extremely valuable in this field and lets people know you're seriosu about government and that you can work with and, in fact, BE a decision-maker. Job prospects may be grim right now. States are facing gigantic deficits, and towns rely greatly on state aid. Non-profits, in turn, rely heavily on towns (as well as state and fed subsidies). So there are a lot of hiring freezes in government. Job prospects will be slim, as they are in business. Now is a good time to intern, because some towns may be short on help and need a set of hands who can help carry some of the load for cheap. Economies tend not to stay down for long, and the contacts you make will help you rise up in competing for more serious jobs. But it's not a field where you can get rich quick... or get rich ever, for that matter. You may not expect to break $50k until you're in your late 20s, depending on how close you are to the top of the pile. If you're a top performer, your school may recommend you for a presidential internship (and what better time than now!) but otherwise, look locally and send letters and resumes to representatives to see fi they need a hand. Good luck!

I will throw out some suggestions in no particular order: The effect of recession on government (local or state or federal) HR departments. The effects of changing demographics on public administration (e.g. aging population, immigrant population, etc.). A content analysis of the nation's best MPA programs (e.g. Indiana, Syracuse, Georgia). Anything on privatization and contracting (e.g. you could conduct a couple case studies and see what common themes emerge). Benefits of partnerships with nonprofit/community-based organizations. The impact of public management networks. An analysis of why MPA graduates are increasingly choosing employment in the private sector rather than public sector. Good luck with your thesis!

Please steer clear of those online, for-profit schools (may have 'bricks and mortar' buildings and may be 'accredited') such as penn foster, strayer, ashworth, university of phoenix, devry, kaplan, argosy, walden, anthem, capella, ITT tech, everest, sanford brown, career step, ashford, colorado tech and others as they are merely out to 'make a profit' (and course credits may not transfer): http://www.ripoffreport.com and can type into search. Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Public Administration -- whats the difference
Masters in Business Administration and Masters in Public Administration -- whats the difference?
What is the difference between the two degrees? Which would be better to earn if I want to be involved with government and politics? I want to get into politics one day and want to have the proper education background to be able to do a good job. I wish to pursue a JD at the same time I earn one these two degrees. I just need to know which one I would make better use of. Thank you for your answers.

You can go into politics with any degree. You just have to be able to shmooze and have contacts. Bush has an MBA. But the most common route to break into government is a JD. As far as practical education, an MBA is more about entrepreneurship. Get a JD/MPA. An MPA will teach you a lot about public policy and you will be taking classes from people who are politicians or associate regularly with politicians if you go to a good school.
2
Master in Public Administration: Training in public policy and public affairs. This one is good if you want to work in government. Masters in Business Administration: A degree leading to business management, finance, high-level executive, corporate officer, etc. This one is good if you want to be a business manager or work in a corporation whether public or private. If you want to get a JD, a Masters in Public Administration may be the best option, but people with English degrees get JDs. This person might practice intellectual property law or copyright law. if you want to be a corporate attorney, you might want to get an MBA. What do you want to do and what type of company do you want to work for? If you specifically want to work for the government, you know what to do (MPA). If you see yourself in corporate America - there's your answer (MBA). It's just a matter of choice. The sites below can give you more info on the programs:

What can I do with a Masters in Public Administration
What can I do with a Masters in Public Administration?
I have a B.A. in Political Science and History and am considering Graduate school. I like the idea of an MPA but I'm not sure how applicable it would be in the job market. What I'm wondering is whether the degree can reliably get me a job after I complete it or whether I would be better of going to law school or getting an MBA.

At the moment, MBA's and law degrees aren't guarantees of anything either. It's impossible to say whether a degree can "reliably" get you a job, since much will depend on a variety of factors, some under your control (how well you perform) and some not. An MPA would be flexible, in that it could open the door to both governmental and other positions. Yale used to offer the MPPA -- Master of Public and Private Administration -- instead of an MBA, which gives you a sense of how close the degrees can sometimes be. Some programs may place more or less emphasis on regular management courses, so you'll have to research them.

It depends on whether you prefer public administration or management in business. No degree can guarantee you a job, but either one can open many doors. By the time you graduate the economy may be better or worse than it is today. Consult the Official MBA Guide. It's a comprehensive free public service with more than 2,000 MBA programs listed worldwide. It allows you to search for programs by location (US, Europe, Far East, etc.), by concentration (finance, marketing, aviation management, health management, accounting, etc.), by type of program (full-time, distance learning, part-time, executive, and accelerated), and by listing your own criteria and preferences to get a list of universities that satisfy your needs. Schools report their accreditation status, tuition cost, number of students, class sizes, program length, and a lot of other data. Schools provide data on entrance requirements, program costs, program characteristics, joint degrees, and much more. You can use the Guide to contact schools of your choice, examine their data, visit their web site, and send them pre applications. You can see lists of top 40 schools ranked by starting salaries of graduates, GMAT scores, and other criteria.

It is difficult to say what online college is the best just as it is difficult to say what campus based college is the best. There are simply too many factors that need to be considered. What is more inportant is finding the best college for you. My recommendation would be to contact a number of colleges that offer the degree program you are looking for to weigh the pro's and con's (tuition, schedule, career opportunities, etc.) so you have all the info before you decide anything. This site has some good information on regionally accredited online degree programs and colleges that offer them: http://www.ecollegefinder.org Good Luck!

Till now I found caluniversity.edu is the best online college for a MBA or Masters of Public Administration. I just heard about an online contest - “California InterContinental University 2009 Scholarship Prize Essay Contestâ€. it’s about an essay writing contest and the winner gets prize money.

Without work experience, neither one of them is a good choice for you. All it would do is place you further into debt and place you in a terrible situation of being overqualified for entry level positions, yet underqualified for higher level positions. No one is going to hire you as a manager just because you have a master's degree. And no one will hire you as an entry level staffer because they feel you will bolt as soon as you get a better job offer. Bottom line, keep job searching and hone your skills. You're better off taking accounting classes and getting a CPA credential instead, for example.

It depends upon the educational requirements where you live. At the level of principal, you might need to possess a post-Master's certificate. A local college or educational school might have more specifics in the area you live in. Your MPA degree should have an equivalent level of flexibility as a MBA...just build up your working or volunteer experience along a line of different industries...that way you give yourself more of that flexibility. Unless you are going to be certified or licensed from your education, or you are "specializing" such as being a lawyer, engineer or nurse, and you hold a significant amount of general and varied working experience, and you have established a significant and important networking system in the professional atmosphere, the major of your degree typically is only important to you.
2
Most schools want principals that have first been teachers. But the exception might be a rural school or private school...and then you would get some experience. I'm also not sure about your degree -- most principals have Master's of Educational Administration.
3
You have to be certified in school administration to be a principal in most states. I have never met a principal who did not teach for a while before getting administration certification. Public administration might qualify you for administrative work in many corporations. Hospitals have administrators as do other health facilities.

Is an MPA (master's public administration) degree difficult?
Asking MPA grads. Are the courses a lot of budgeting/finance/HR kind of stuff? Sounds pretty boring to me, with a lot of economics and arithmetic. I know I'd like the government policy/planning oriented careers an MPA can attain but man the courses sure sound boring...

Please clarify whether you actually mean "Masters" (i.e several people who are Masters) or "Master's *in* Public Administration" (i.e. a master's degree). "Masters in Public Administration" would be "Mestres de Administração pública" - ""Master's in Public Administration" would be "Maestria em Administração pública"

The real answer is Mestrado em Administração Pública, the other two people who answered got it wrong.

I have an MPA, and given the state of the economy, it is next to impossible for me to find a job in the public sector. If you choose to pursue the degree, I offer the following advice: 1) Work throughout your program so that you do not have to look for a job when you get out. 2) If you do not have a job, intern the entire time you are in the program, even if just for 10 hours a week. 3) Learn something useful, like statistical analysis and public finance, preferably both so you can become a Finance or Management Analyst. Enough people know organizational theory and leadership. 4) Anything with "strategic" in the title is probably a good class to take.
I currently have a B.S. in Social Work and am going for my M.P.A. I am worried that I will not be able to find a job after achieving my masters. I live in Chicago and am trying to find a way of going about finding an entry-level job for a position in Public Administration.

UC Irvine or CSU Dominguez Hills? M.A.S in Criminology, Law and Society or Master of Public Administration
UC Irvine or CSU Dominguez Hills? M.A.S in Criminology, Law and Society or Master of Public Administration?
Hi! I have completed BS. Criminal Justice Administration and thinking what career path shuold I take. Do I go for Mater of Advance Studies in Criminology, Law, and Society from UCI or an (MPA) or Master of Public Administration from California State University Dominguez Hills? Do I get more chances of getting a better job from UCI or CSUDH? Which one do you think will be more appealing for local, state or federal government employers? Please help. I would prefer a course or a school that can help me get a better and more secured job in the future. Which one is the wisest idea?

seriously, the gov't employers care more about your degree than where you earned it. It doesn't matter for a gov't job unless its academic related like a state university job... If I were you, i would go to UCI no matter what...Irvine is a top 10 public university. I think Cal is 2, UCLA is 3, Michigan 4, and UCSD, Irvine, and Davis are all also in the top 10. CSU Dominguez is not even close to their levels in terms of reputation.

What should a resume for a Masters in Public Administration include?
I am applying for graduate school seeking a Masters of Public Administration and was asked for a resume. What should this look like? Should it be different from my "just out of college, looking for a job" resume?

Hi, if you are an intelligent person and have secured a minimum of 60% marks in the last course and your income is low then you can apply for the scholarship at www.nicelife.we.bs they do not provide cash assistance, but will provide you the help only through booklets, and cds etc FREE of Cost. There are only two conditions to fulfill. you must be intelligent and you must be earning a low amount or not earning at all. Thanks
