You could teach social studies, politics, or civics at any level, including at some colleges. You could run for public office, or you could serve as a staffer to an elected official. Every politician has lots of staff who do everything from setting up their schedule to advising them on policy issues. You could work for a government agency, for a nonprofit, or for a business that needs someone to liaise with the government. You have so many options - it really depends on what interests you!

What are some starting ideas for internships in public administration

What are some starting ideas for internships in public administration?
I'm planning on entering an MPA program next fall. I know it's kind of a long way off, but I really want to do an internship after I complete my studies. The degree I will be getting is a Master's in Public Administration. I will probably choose the concentration in Nonprofit Administration. I'd really like to do my internship for a large NGO - preferably one with an international focus. I would also consider internships in the federal or state government if I still could have a public service focus. Where are some good places to start?

If you are in the U.S., get in touch with your local senators and representatives (state and federal) and government leaders. If you give them a really big campaign donation, that is even better.

It could--especially if you do a program with a strong international P.A. emphasis. Some MPA programs (I know the University of Washington is one) have a cooperative arrangement with the Peace Corps that lets you begin your study on campus, then go into the Peace Corps and get credit for work you do there, and then return and finish up your degree. That might be something you'd want to look at.

Anyone know how I can break into the government sector with a Master of Public Administration? I'm one class from completion of this degree. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

What school? Look for public government events, meet people. Know what agency you want to work for - it's easier if you're passionate about one thing, i.e. education, the elderly. In government, getting hired is based on who you know, not always what you know.

It depends. Do you have an MPA from a reputation school? If so, then they should have career counseling help. Or did you get it online at University of Phoenix or some other diploma mill? It's pretty simple, start applying for jobs where you live. Any local government (city, county, village, town, etc.) should have a website with employment listings online. Having an MPA is a great way to start a career in local government. Also, visit your state's website and click on employment opportunities to see what state jobs are available. I suggest you also try interning or volunteering. You'll need some experience on your resume for some jobs. Good luck.

Work as a director for a city, hospital, or NPO. It's a good degree if you want to work for the gov't. I was considering doing a joint MPA/JD but the MPA doesn't really earn you that much money. I just went the JD route. Good luck!

Master's of Public Administration or MBA

Master's of Public Administration or MBA?
I'm presently looking at different graduate programs and want to pursue a career where making money isn't the ultimate bottom line. That is, I would like to have a cause to work toward. Which degree would be better for this? Would the MPA be too limiting? Can anyone with an MBA do any job requiring an MPA? Can I support a family in the future with an MPA-related career?

With either one, you need work experience first. By the sound of your post, you don't seem to have done this yet. I would suggest you get into the non-profit arena and work a few years, then think about a masters program. You'll then have a clear idea of what direction you want to go into.
